Cuban foreign minister arrives in India for BRICS meeting

by Ed Newman

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday, convened under India’s pro tempore presidency.

The Cuban foreign minister received a warm welcome at the airport from Indian authorities, according to a statement from the Indian Foreign Ministry.

Cuba, as a partner country of the intergovernmental group, will participate in the BRICS@20 sessions: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability and Reforms of Global Governance and the Multilateral System.

For the Caribbean nation, in particular, this will be a new opportunity to update participants on the challenges facing the country, stemming from the intensification of the blockade, the energy embargo, and the threats of military intervention by the United States.

Cuba shares with the BRICS the call to promote profound global reform that takes into account the legitimate interests of the Global South, the defense of multilateralism, and international cooperation as the foundations of peaceful coexistence among states.

It also rejects the unilateral coercive measures of the most powerful countries against nations that are trying to build a sovereign and independent path toward their own development.

Likewise, the Cuban government has reiterated to the Indian presidency of the bloc its full support and willingness to continue collaborating within the BRICS to achieve the Group’s objectives through cooperation in the political, economic, social, and environmental spheres, in which the Caribbean nation can offer its modest experience and expertise.

Cuba is attending the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting for the second consecutive year as a partner country of this Group; its first participation took place in April 2025 at the Rio de Janeiro meeting, under the pro tempore Presidency of Brazil.
