Prensa Latina celebrates 67th anniversary with the incorporation of digital platforms and multimedia formats

by Ed Newman

The Latin American news agency Prensa Latina celebrates its 67th anniversary on Tuesday, firmly established as one of the longest-running and most far-reaching news projects to emerge in Latin America during the 20th century.

Founded in Havana in 1959 at the initiative of then-Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro and Commander Ernesto “Che” Guevara, it was shaped by the Argentinian journalist Jorge Ricardo Masetti, who assumed the initial leadership and established its bureaus.

From the outset, it developed a news structure with a presence in multiple regions of the world and currently maintains correspondents in more than 30 countries and a network of contributors in Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and Asia, enabling it to provide a continuous flow of information on international, regional and local events.

Throughout its history, the agency has reported on significant international events, including political processes in Latin America, armed conflicts such as the Vietnam War, national liberation movements in Africa, multilateral summits, global economic crises, health emergencies, and major sporting events.

At the regional level, it has systematically monitored Latin American integration processes, political transitions, and contemporary social dynamics.

Journalism experts have noted that Prensa Latina has established itself as a leading news source within the Spanish-language media landscape, highlighting its regional coverage and longevity in a highly competitive environment.

According to these assessments, its main strength has been the expertise of its professionals and contributors, as well as its stable presence and editorial continuity in changing international scenarios.

Regarding the reception of its content, readers and subscribers emphasize that its news services cover a wide range of topics and have a broad geographic scope, encompassing everything from international politics to science, culture, and sports in almost every corner of the world.

Regular users of its services also highlight the usefulness of its content as a complementary source for media outlets, academic institutions, and regional analyses.

Prensa Latina has also developed significant editorial work through print and digital periodicals. Among them, the international weekly Orbe stands out, recognized for its global analytical approach and its editorial team based on the work of correspondents in dozens of countries.

This publication reflects weekly on political, economic, scientific, and cultural events from different regions of the world.

According to information from the agency itself, Orbe is produced with contributions from correspondents in more than 30 countries and is distributed in print and digital formats in several markets, including Latin America.

The agency has also developed other publications such as Cuba Internacional, one of its longest-running magazines, as well as various specialized supplements on economics, health, culture, and science.

On an institutional level, the Agency celebrates its 67th anniversary amidst a process of editorial strengthening, marked by technological transformation, the incorporation of digital platforms and multimedia formats that expand content distribution, and its adaptation to new information consumption dynamics—a process evident throughout the anniversary celebrations.

Currently, Prensa Latina maintains its operations in a media environment characterized by digital immediacy, platform diversification, and increasing global competition, sustaining its daily news service and its network of correspondents across various continents.

On this anniversary, the agency celebrates more than six decades of uninterrupted work, maintaining its presence as a key player within the international news agency system and the Latin American communications ecosystem.

As part of the celebrations, Prensa Latina will commemorate this milestone at the José Martí Memorial and recognize the achievements of its most distinguished members.
