The members of the Cuban brigade of 37 rescuers and three dogs who supported the search and rescue efforts after the intense earthquakes in Venezuela received the “Heroes of Venezuela” medal on Friday.

Along with representatives from six other countries — Costa Rica, Panama, El Salvador, Mexico, Turkey, and Vietnam — Acting President Delcy Rodríguez presented the medal to Lieutenant Colonel Rubén Pupo, head of the mission, who accepted it on behalf of his fellow citizens.

The award was also presented by the president to Choco, Evan, and Tito, the three expert search and rescue dogs who accompanied the Cuban specialists, who arrived in Venezuela in two groups at the request of the Bolivarian government.

Furthermore, the acting head of state delivered a letter of gratitude to the Cuban ambassador in Caracas, Jorge Mayo, expressing her appreciation to Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and his government for their solidarity and humanitarian contribution in the face of what is considered the “greatest natural disaster” in the nation’s history.

Last week, Foreign Minister Yván Gil, on behalf of his government and the Venezuelan people, expressed his profound gratitude to the Cuban rescuers who arrived to assist in the search and rescue efforts for those affected by the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck on June 24.

This valuable team, announced by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, joins the Cuban medical brigade that “was already in our country as part of the deep bonds of solidarity that have always characterized our nations,” the high-ranking diplomat wrote on his Telegram account.

Gil emphasized that the Bolivarian Government and the Venezuelan people express their “deep gratitude” to the group of Cuban rescuers who came to participate in the intense search efforts for people trapped under the rubble.

The arrival in Venezuela of a group of rescuers to support the search for trapped individuals and assist our medical brigade “is yet another example of #Cuba’s unwavering solidarity with the brotherly Venezuelan people,” wrote Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez on social media.

With this specialized rescue personnel, including doctors, forensic experts, and members of the Henry Reeve Brigade, Cuba reinforced its aid to the Venezuelan people, who immediately received support and assistance from the Medical Mission working in all 24 states of the country and continuing to provide its healthcare services.
