Havana, Jun 20 (RHC) - Focused on the mixed doubles event, especially on the pair of Daniela Fonseca and Jorge Moises Campos, the Caribbean Table Tennis Championship 2025 will continue today in Bridgetown, capital of Barbados, where the Cubans have already celebrated with a silver medal.
After securing qualification for the next world championship of the specialty, the men's and women's teams faced their most demanding rival in the area for the gold medal at the Wildey Gymnasium: Puerto Rico.
The men lost 2-3 after the Puerto Rican Ángel Naranjo became the executioner of Liván Martínez and Adrián Pérez, against the latter in the decisive match when it was tied at two wins each.
The women, who had not lost a single set before reaching the final match, had the same adverse score. Daniela fulfilled her role as leader of the team by winning the two matches in which she participated, first against Fabiola Diaz and later against Brianna Burgos.
However, Estela Rodriguez went the other way and lost a couple of games. Rosalba Aguiar also failed to win in the only match in which she played.
In addition to qualifying for the world championship, the Cubans secured their presence as a team in the next Pan American Cup in Rock Hill, next October in San Francisco, and scored points in what is considered the first qualifying phase for the Central American and Caribbean Games of Santo Domingo 2026.
On Thursday, they advanced in the group phase of the individual modality, and for this Friday afternoon, the main draw between the mixed pairs is scheduled.
In the round of 32, Daniela and Jorge Moises will face hosts Anthonette Riley-Kevin Farley, and Estela and Adrian will face Jamaicans Gianna Lewis-Kane Watson.
In the men's doubles, Liván-Jorge Moisés and Adrián-Diomar Argüelles will advance to the round of 32. In the women's doubles, Daniela-Estela and Rosalba-Karla Perez advanced directly to the quarterfinals.
