Havana, May 13 (RHC)-- The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel, expressed his sorrow this Tuesday over the death of former Uruguayan president José "Pepe" Mujica, whom he described as a figurehead of Latin American struggles and a symbol of resistance.
On his X account, the head of state wrote: "Our America mourns the passing of Mujica. His extraordinary life recalls the dark era of military dictatorships sponsored by Washington, but also the hopeful period of the leftist parties in power and the unfulfilled dream of integration. Let us not forget."
On the same social media platform, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez affirmed that Mujica will always be remembered as a tireless fighter for the freedom and unity of Our America.
The highest representative of Cuban diplomacy expressed his solidarity with the former president's partner, as well as with the Uruguayan government, family, and friends.
Mujica (1935-2025) was a guerrilla fighter who spent 14 years in prison for his fight against the dictatorship. He died today, at the age of 89 -- just one week short of his 90th birthday, on May 20th -- at his farm on the outskirts of Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital.
Between 2010 and 2015, he served as president of his country. Since early 2024, he has been battling esophageal cancer, which later spread to his liver.
