Mexico City, April 14 (teleSUR-RHC)-- Mexican activists, including politicians, activists and actors, launched a referendum campaign on Monday with the aim of forcing President Enrique Peña Nieto to step down.

The organizations will take advantage of June’s legislative and regional elections to distribute special ballots demanding the revocation of Peña Nieto's term in office. During the campaign launch, organizers explained that the campaign is due to the widening problems of poverty, corruption, insecurity and impunity, which have increased significantly during Peña Nieto's government.

“We intend to show clearly and decisively our rejection of Enrique Peña Nieto's government, which is why we will demand the ballots to be counted in order to show the magnitude of popular repudiation against his government,” explained the organizers.

Despite no mechanism in the Mexican constitution existing to validate the removal of the president mid-term, the campaign will try to have special ballot papers issued under a provision in the country’s election law. The organizers explained they will reach out to the national electoral institute to make the ballots and the process legally valid.

Among the high-profile organizers of the campaign are actor Daniel Gimenez Cacho, senators Javier Corral, Manuel Bartlett and Layda Sansores, and Priest Alejandro Solalinde.
