Havana, January 18 (RHC)-- More than 12,000 delegates to the municipal assemblies of People's Power are electing this Saturday the governors and deputy governors of their respective provinces.

The Municipal Assemblies will simultaneously vote for the candidates proposed by the President of the Republic, Miguel Diaz-Canel.

The Provincial Electoral Councils will carry out the final count of the delegates' vote, validating and declaring elected those who reach more than half of the valid votes cast.

This election takes place in compliance with one of the transitory provisions of the new Constitution proclaimed last year, which gave the President three months to present his proposals of candidates for these positions.

Candidates are required to be Cuban citizens by birth and have no other citizenship, be at least 30 years old, reside in the province, and enjoy full civil and political rights.

The Governor will head the Provincial Government of People's Power, which is also made up of the Provincial Council. That body's primary mission is to ensure the economic and social development of its territory, following the country's general objectives.

It acts as a coordinator between the central structures of the State and the municipalities, contributing to the harmonization of the interests of the province and its municipalities.
