Cuba pays tribute to Alicia Alonso on her 101st birthday anniversary

Havana, December 21 (RHC)-- December 21st, 2021, marks the 101st birthday anniversary of prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso. On the occasion, a large traveling exhibition dedicated to this legend of Cuban and universal classical dance, was inaugurated, integrated into public spaces across the Cuban capital.

The exhibition compiles the winning works of the 1st Alicia Alonso 2021 International Dance Photography Contest, organized by the creative project MATRIA, under the auspices of UNESCO, in coordination with the José Martí Cultural Society, the Cuban National Commission of UNESCO, Fondo Cubano de Bienes Culturales and the Cuban Ministry of Culture.

The international photography competition was dedicated also to celebrate the work and professionalism of Cuban dancers anywhere in the world. The jury, made up of renowned experts from Cuba, United States, Argentina and Russia, analyzed more than 1 700 works by 275 photographers, in 29 countries on all five continents.

The winners of the Alicia Alonso photography competition were announced on October 28th past, coinciding with the 73rd anniversary of Ballet Nacional de Cuba –the Cuban flagship dance company founded precisely by Alicia.

From Havana, the traveling exhibition as tribute to prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso on her 101st birthday anniversary will tour other major cities across the country.
