New gallery in Panama promotes Cuban art

Cuban culture minister Alpidio Alonso thanked Panamanian cultural authorities for the inauguration of a gallery in the Central American nation to promote Cuban art. ‘This gallery will showcase works that highlight Cuban culture and identity,’ Alpido Alonso wrote on Twitter.

The inauguration on Tuesday was attended by Panamanian deputy culture minister Gabriel González, other cultural authorities, Cuba’s ambassador Lydia Margarita González and members of the Association of Cuban Residents in Panamá.

The exhibition ‘Arte Facto’ was inaugurated on the opening day. It includes works by Cuban painters Carlos Guzmán and Ernesto Córdova, who reside in Panama.

Both artists thanked the gallery authorities for the opportunity. They stressed that the space could become a meeting place, a space for Panamanian artists to exchange and work jointly with their peers from Cuba and from other Latin American nations, who are driven by a common interest in promoting and spreading hope and love, which is what art is all about.

Panamanian lawyer Alma Montenegro, a good friend of Cuba and its Revolution, took the opportunity, on behalf of Panamanian artist Pedro Rivera, to donate a work by Cuban painter René Portocarrero to the Caribbean island.

Likewise, Montenegro donated Cuban ambassador Lydia Margarita González a poster by Panamanian artist Ricardo Jaime de Freitas on the transfer of the world-famous Panama Canal to Panama in 1999.
