Matanzas-Granma baseball grand finale gets underway on March 28th

Havana, March 20 (RHC)-- The Cuban baseball final between the Matanzas Crocodiles and the Granma Alazanes will get underway on March 28th at the José Antonio Huelga stadium in Sancti Spirtitus (central Cuba).

The decision was made in view of the effort and results of that province to organize sporting events, especially in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Alazanes de Granma came out of isolation on Thursday and will start training tomorrow, Saturday, at the Mártires de Barbados Stadium in Bayamo, in preparation for the grand finale, a best-of-seven game, reported journalist Ibrahín Sánchez.

As for the players involved in the brawl in the sixth game of the semi-final between Matanzas and Las Tunas, the national commission decided to sanction 6 players -- 4 from Las Tunas and 2 from Matanzas.  In announcing the measure, National Commissioner Ernesto Reinoso explained that the unsportsmanlike attitude of the Las Tunas player Hector Castillo, who provoked the brawl, and subsequent statements of repentance by those involved, were taken into account when handing down the sanctions.

Castillo will receive the highest sanction, being suspended for the first two subseries of next season.

The two sanctioned Matanzas players, Yadir Drake and Joel Suárez, were suspended during the first game of the final of the current campaign.
