Havana, February 2 (RHC)-- The Cuban team to the V World Baseball Classic received today the visit of the country's president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, at the Latin American stadium in Havana.

A Twitter post, disseminated by Cuba's First Deputy Minister Jorge Luis Perdomo, shows several photos in which Díaz-Canel exchanges with the players and coaching staff of the national team.

President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez is now with the members of the Cuban baseball team that will participate in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, the note says.

Cuba will participate in the V World Classic, scheduled for March 8 to 21, as part of Group A, to be held in Taipei, China.

Its rivals in that first stage will be, in order, the teams of the Netherlands, Italy, Panama and the host team.

For the 2023 universal tournament, the Cuban call-up included several players active in the U.S. Major Leagues, a milestone that marks a before and after in the history of baseball.
In addition, the Antillean country's roster includes players active in the elite championships of Japan, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, in addition to a core of players from the local tournament.

Cuba's best performance in these world championships dates back to the first edition, in 2006, when it reached the final before losing to Japan in an anthological game, defined in the last minute.

After that performance, the largest of the Antilles never again reached the podium of the competition.
