Santiago de Chile 2023

Santiago de Chile, July 11 (JIT).- The National Sports Institute of Chile (IND) unblocked the funds for the preparation of the Pan American and Parapan American Games of Santiago 2023, after normalizing the financial situation of the organizing entity, it was reported here.

Since last April, the delivery of money to the Santiago 2023 Corporation, responsible for the maximum continental sporting event, was frozen due to the delay in the rendering of accounts on what was awarded in 2022 and the first quarter of this year.

Although finances were available to continue the work at least until August, the situation became complicated and led to the dismissal in June of the Corporation's executive director, Gianna Cunazza.

She was replaced by Harold Mayne-Nicholls, who undertook to send the corresponding reports and comply with the recommendations made by the Comptroller's Office regarding the management of funds by July 7 at the latest.

Once this requirement had been met, the IND released close to 90 billion Chilean pesos (some US$112.5 million) to complete the construction of the different venues and other administrative expenses of the organization.

Mayne-Nicholls assured that "from now on we can get rid of the red card we had and work directly involved in the Games".

The Pan American Games will be held from October 20 to November 5 and the Parapan American Games from November 17 to 26.
