Bronze for Cuba in Norceca Final Six

Havana, August 27 (JIT)-- The Cuban women's volleyball team won the bronze medal at the Norceca Final Six in Santo Domingo 2023, in the Dominican Republic, after defeating its Mexican counterpart 3-1.

According to www.norceca.net, the Cubans lost the first set 22-25, but reacted with a 25-17, 25-17 and 25-18 sweep in one hour and 54 minutes of action on the court.

Their main weapon was their blocking with 15 points to four for the Mexicans. The victory also had a lot to do with the distribution of the attack among the players, with a highlight for middle blocker Jessica Aguilera with 13 points, seven in attack, four in blocking and two in service. Corner attacker Diaris Perez contributed 13 (9-3-1).

Also outstanding for the Greater Antilles were middle blocker Laura Suarez (11/ 7-4-0) and outside hitters Ivy May Vila (11/ 11-0-0) and Geisy Finé (10/ 10-0-0). For Mexico, the top scorer of the match was Grecia Esther Castro (22/ 19-0-2) and Karen Paula Rivera (14/ 9-2-1).

The official statistics of the match also show better results for Cuba in attack (49-42) and own errors (21-29), while the Mexicans stood out in service (10-4).

Canada finished in fifth place with a 3-0 set win (25-12, 25-12 and 25-13) over Puerto Rico, who finished in sixth place.

The Greater Antilles, with 13 points, two wins and three setbacks, finished in third place in the standings after the preliminary round-robin system, behind the United States (23/5-0) and the Dominican Republic (20/4-1), and ahead of Mexico (10/2-3), Canada (9/2-3) and Puerto Rico (0/0-5).
