Havana, September 18 (JIT) Cuba won second place in the team tournament of the Calgary 2023 Pan American and Oceania Judo Championships.

The match between Brazil, Canada and the Greater of the Antilles was carried out in a round-robin system to decide the pair of finalists.

The Brazilians won their two matches, so the match between locals and Cubans decided the second qualifier to the dispute for the crown. Our team went through with a slate of four bouts to one. In the final, the South Americans won by a 4-0 sweep.

This was the third silver medal for Cuba in the event, in addition to those won in the individual competitions by Orlando Polanco (66 kg) and Idalys Ortiz (+78 kg). The bronze medals were won by Jonathan Charón (60 kg), Magdiel Estrada (73 kg) and Maylín del Toro (63 kg).

Andy Granda signed the best performance, when he won the final over world bronze medalist Rafael Silva, from Brazil.

The Cuban performance closed with the third place in the medal standings of a tournament that hosted 159 competitors from 23 countries.

The result can be considered positive considering that the only losses were to representatives of Brazil and Canada, powers in the continent.
