Grupo de Puebla denounces persecution of Salvadoran political leaders

Mexico City, August 12 (RHC)-- The Latin American Council for Justice and Democracy (Clajud) of the Puebla Group issued a statement warning about the persecution of Salvadoran political leaders and the violation of the so-called due process in the Central American country.

"This is a dangerous operation of political harassment through a legal war (lawfare) against opposition leaders. They have sent repressive legal injunctions against ten leaders who were part of the 2009-2014 Cabinet seeking for them to leave the country due to the lack of guarantees," the missive specified.

The Puebla Group denounces that Salvadoran leaders have been victims of detentions without just cause and are awaiting a judicial process.   "Surely the cases will be manipulated by judges and control authorities at the service of the regime," they add.

The regional platform urges respect for democracy in El Salvador, allowing the exercise of civil and political rights in the country.   "We propose the formation of an international watchdog to ensure the free exercise of political, human and legal rights of the persecuted leaders."

The Puebla Group assures that the detainees have not been able to access essential medicines for their health.  On the other hand, the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) also denounced the position of the Government against its militants.

The member of the FMLN Political Commission, Juan José Ángel, expressed that there have been "100 days of publicity but few results.  What the government publicists have specialized in is to intensify their authoritarianism and lack of transparency," referring to the government's position regarding governmental measures and the persecution of militants.

The former vice-president of El Salvador in the 2014-2019 period, Oscar Ortíz, last month denounced the actions promoted by the Executive and specified that despite the persecution they will continue to fight for a State that guarantees freedom of thought.
