Lebanon calls for unity to elect the President of the Republic

Havana, April 19 (RHC) - The Assembly of Ulema (Muslim scholars) in Lebanon today asked Parliament representatives to unite to elect a new president of the Republic, after more than five months of power vacuum.

Through a statement, the collective called for an internal dialogue between the political forces and the blocks of deputies in order to agree on a name that can be acceptable to everyone in office.

The academics indicated that one part of the legislature is loyal and the other is in the opposition, in light of the failure of 11 sessions to designate the new head of state since last September 29.

When addressing economic problems, the scholars emphasized the need to approve laws within the recovery plan, including Capital Control so as not to deprive depositors of their funds in banks.

On the regional scene, the Ulema Assembly highlighted the resistance of the Palestinian combatants against the brutality and injustice of the Israeli entity. At the same time, they praised the positive steps in the course of Arab reconciliations, which led to the release of prisoners between Saudi Arabia and Yemen; in addition to the visit of the foreign minister of Riyadh, Faisal bin Farhan, to Damascus.

Likewise, the group of scholars emphasized that such progress will inevitably lead to the return of order to the League of Arab States so it can assume its role in protecting regional interests and defending the Palestinian people.

In the midst of deteriorating living conditions and a political crisis, the Lebanese skeptically await the election of the next president of the Republic, as the initial way to promote recovery reforms.
