Landslides and floods in at least 10 provinces of Ecuador

Havana, April 23 (RHC) - The intense rains of the last few hours have caused floods, landslides, road closures and other damage this Sunday in at least 10 provinces of Ecuador.

The newspaper El Comercio reports that these effects are perceived with greater intensity in territories of the coast and the mountains, such as Guayas, Los Ríos, Manabí, Santa Elena, El Oro, Cotopaxi, Santo Domingo de Los Tsáchilas, Esmeraldas, Imbabura and Chimborazo.

In Pichincha, for example, last night there were simultaneous landslides at various points on the Mitad del Mundo-Río Blanco highway, in the northwest of Quito, and also on the Alóag-Unión del Toachi highway, in the south of the capital.

A few days ago, the Esmeraldas River overflowed and affected some sectors of the capital of the province that bears the same name.

In Manabí, for their part, the families of the Pichincha municipality suffered material losses due as the Daule River left its usual channel.

The city of Guayaquil was flooded several times this week due to the accumulation of rain and the increase in the tide of the Guayas River.

Several sectors of Ibarra, capital of the Andean province of Imbabura, were flooded by the overflow of the Ajavi River.

So far the authorities have not reported an exact figure for the number of people affected by these situations. The Ecuadorian Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology warned that bad weather conditions due to winter will continue until Monday. (Source: Prensa Latina)
