At least 15 people are dead and eight others missing due to heavy rains over the weekend, Haiti's Civil Protection Department reported on Monday.

Port-au-Prince, June 5 (RHC)-- At least 15 people are dead and eight others missing due to heavy rains over the weekend, Haiti's Civil Protection Department reported on Monday.

Eight of the deaths occurred in the West department, five in the Southeast and two in the Northwest, the poorest in the country.  According to provisional figures, over five of the ten geographic departments, 1,219 houses have been destroyed and 23,390 people are displaced.

According to the report, the agricultural sector has been greatly affected in the Centro department. This situation could worsen as a result of the floods that have devastated part of the country.  In the West department, 25,648 people have been affected and 12,906 displaced.

"The most urgent needs are shelter, food and hygiene kits and drinking water," according to the partial assessment.

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry stated that his government "together with national and international institutions, is taking steps to address the urgent needs of the moment."
