Quito, June 17 (RHC)-- Councilman Jairo Olaya, from the Ecuadorian city of Esmeraldas and a militant of the Citizen Revolution (RC) movement, died Saturday after being shot four days ago.

Hitmen attacked the politician on the morning of Tuesday, June 13, while he was driving in a vehicle through the streets of his municipality.

After being urgently treated in a health center in Esmeraldas, he was transferred to Quito, where he died.

Former president Rafael Correa, leader of the CR, sent condolences to Olaya's family.

"The pain is immense, as is the indignation. Political violence did not exist in the country. Since a few years ago, it is an everyday thing. What did they do to you, Homeland!", expressed the former president on Twitter.

This new attack against a politician occurs almost a month after the attack suffered by the mayor of the city of Durán, in the province of Guayas, Luis Chonillo.

The event also takes place at a time when the CR is regaining popularity among Ecuadorians in view of the early general elections of next August 20. (Source:PL)
