Damascus, February 4 (RHC)-- Syria has strongly condemned the United States' strikes against the country, saying they are deliberately aimed at weakening Damascus' fight against Takfiri terrorist groups, especially Daesh.

The Syrian military made the remarks in a statement on Saturday after the US conducted a raft of airstrikes against the eastern Syrian province of Dayr al-Zawr and the city of al-Bukamal near the Iraqi border.  "The U.S. aggression today dawn has no justification, but is an attempt to weaken the Syrian army’s capability to fight terrorism," the statement said.

The Syrian army added that those regions that were targeted by US strikes "are the same where the Syrian army fights remnants of the Daesh terrorist group, and this confirms that the US is in cahoots and allied with this group."

The U.S.-created terror group unleashed a campaign of bloodshed and destruction against Syria and neighboring Iraq in 2014, overrunning swathes of their territories.  A U.S.-led coalition comprising Washington and a number of its allies rolled into those countries shortly after Daesh's emergence under the pretext of fighting the terror outfit. The coalition has maintained its presence in both countries, although Damascus and Baghdad defeated the terrorists with the help of their allies, especially Iran, in late 2017.

Also on Saturday, the Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry condemned the U.S. attacks, saying it categorically rejected all the lies that were being promoted by the American administration to justify the aggression.  "It is not surprising that the American attack targets the eastern region of Syria where our forces are fighting against the remnants of Daesh terrorist group, while the United States is working to revive ISIS (Daesh) terrorist activity," the ministry said in its statement.

The uncalled-for aggression, the ministry added, proves once again that the United States is the main source of global instability and that its military forces threaten international peace and security, and stoke conflict across the region.

It also slammed the United Nation's silence over Washington's aggression, saying: "The Syrian Arab Republic expresses its deep concern over the state of paralysis of the UN Security council as the US hinders its ability to fulfill its responsibilities for halting such dangerous violations.”
