Caracas, October 1 (Xinhua-RHC) -- Regional and sub-regional blocs should help reform the United Nations to fit the current world political landscape, a Venezuelan legislator suggested in Caracas on Tuesday.

In an interview with Venezuela's TV network Telesur, Angel Rodriguez, deputy to the regional Latin American Parliament (Parlatino), said “the road map to a reorganized UN that better reflects today's multilateral world lies in the experiences of regional organizations in Latin America, Asia and Africa.”

Rodriguez cited such international organizations as the BRICS, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA) as examples.

The BRICS groups emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The legislator also called for urgent structural and institutional changes to the UN, saying the organization has been transformed into a means "to violate the sovereignty and independence" of nations, such as those in the Middle East.

During the 69th UN General Assembly session, some leaders of countries and representatives of international organizations have called for an overhaul of the international body's governing system, which gives overriding veto power to any one of just five permanent members of its Security Council.
