La Paz, May 17 (RHC)-- Bolivia's Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) announced this Friday that former President Evo Morales may begin the registration process as a presidential pre-candidate for the August 17 elections, although it warned that his effective participation will depend on strict compliance with legal requirements.
Óscar Hassenteufel, interim president of the electoral body, emphasized that any nomination must comply with the ruling of the Plurinational Constitutional Tribunal, which limits the number of consecutive terms in office to two. He also stated that the TSE must verify compliance with all constitutional and legal requirements, particularly those established regarding presidential reelections.
The TSE president also emphasized that Morales must prove his representation through a legally recognized political party, an aspect that currently remains unresolved.
Hassenteufel's statements came in parallel with a mobilization of supporters of the indigenous leader, who were heading to the TSE headquarters to register their candidacy.
In light of these events, the official guaranteed the right to peaceful protest. "If they have to arrive, then there's no problem, let them arrive peacefully. There's no measure we can take against a peaceful march," he said.
The formal registration period for candidates will close next Monday, May 19th. Once this period has passed, the TSE will begin the comprehensive verification process of all the documentation submitted by the candidates.
In accordance with the established electoral schedule, the official list of qualified candidates will be announced publicly on Friday, June 6th, 2025. This information will be available for public consultation through the official website of the Plurinational Electoral Body (OEP).
According to the interim president of the electoral body, any nomination must comply with the ruling limiting consecutive terms to two, while Morales must be accredited through a legally recognized political party.
