New York, January 18 (RHC)-- At the UN Security Council, Cuba condemned what it called the 'politicization of the conflict in Syria.'

Addressing a meeting of the 15-member UN body to analyze the Middle East situation, Cuban ambassador Humberto Rivero said that strict respect for Syria's sovereignty and independence is key to achieving a lasting solution to the crisis.

The Cuban diplomat criticized the double-standard of western countries that defend their own geopolitical interests to the detriment of the Syrian people, who for over six years have suffered the horrors of war and terrorism.
