The official recalled that during the most complex stage of Covid-19, the collaboration did not stop.

Havana, Nov 25 (RHC) The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) acknowledged Friday that Cuba maintains a high level of response to emergencies, and ratified the continuity of collaboration with the Caribbean Island.

In a meeting with the press at UNICEF headquarters, its representative in the Antillean country, Alejandra Trossero, explained that on November 27 it will be 30 years since the opening of the office in Havana and since then the accompaniment to the government is permanent.

"We have a great experience and we will continue to support Cuba when events such as the powerful and destructive hurricane Ian, the explosion at the Saratoga hotel, and the great fire at the Supertanker Base in the city of Matanzas occur," she assured.

She stressed that "it is strategic for us to be one step ahead, not to wait for a disaster to happen to start acting, it is necessary to have prepared ourselves before", he said.

She recalled that they work together with the Cuban Civil Defense, and after the passage of Hurricane Ian they supported with waterproofed roofs in the schools of the western province of Pinar del Río so that classes could be resumed as soon as possible.

"As part of our work, we provide educational kits to reduce the impact of the losses of the school material due to the heavy rains, but at the same time we deliver kits for early childhood as part of the psychosocial support," said the UNICEF representative.

"A fundamental element for us as UNICEF is the re-establishment of water, hence we bought more than 40 drainage pumps and contributed with a water purification plant for the precious liquid", Trossero exemplified.

She commented that during the most complex stage of Covid-19 the collaboration did not stop, and they contributed with an oxygen plant, and materials for the protection of health personnel including masks, gloves, and antibacterial gel, besides obtaining financing for the cold chain of the vaccines.
