Cuban Society of Endocrinology committed to improving medical care

Havana, June 26 (RHC) The Cuban Society of Endocrinology and Diabetes celebrates its 70th anniversary with the commitment to stimulate scientific research related to chronic diseases that affect the quality of life of patients.

The president of that union, Dr. Silvia Turcios, pointed out that a Scientific Conference is being held at the Institute of Endocrinology of Havana to commemorate the anniversary and also with a view to improving the care practice that concerns these pathologies.

As part of the activity, the progress of the specialty and the results of the work of great professionals, such as Doctors of Science Daysi Navarro and Gilda Monteagudo will be reviewed. Topics related to diagnosis and therapeutics of certain diseases such as diabetes will be updated.

Honorable figures who promoted the development of these branches of medicine in the country, such as the late doctors Oscar Mateo de Acosta, founder of the Institute of Endocrinology, and Bartolomé Arce Hidalgo, pioneer in studies on in vitro fertilization in the nation, will also be honored.

Silvia Turcios recognized that the work carried out by the Society becomes an important pillar in relation to the development and training of personnel associated with the specialties involved, and that they are in great demand in an aging society like Cuba's.

One of the ambitions of this association is to add new members, for example, specialists in Comprehensive General Medicine, nurses, and other technicians who provide services in diabetic care entities.

Turcios emphasized how the improvement of specialists contributes to the application of preventive approaches, to their ability to establish diagnoses, and to the definition and orientation of behaviors that delay the appearance of chronic diseases.

She added that one of the permanent work guidelines is encouraging and developing research in each of the country's provinces, generalizing its results, and providing professionals with better tools to increase the quality of care.

As remarked by the president of the Society, one of the greatest strengths of the guild is precisely its ability to integrate into an existing network in the nation that collaborates in scientific findings, teaching and care practices.

Turcios declared that another of the events dedicated to commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Society is the Tenth National Congress of Endocrinology, to be held between November 8 and 10 at the Tryp Habana Libre hotel in Havana.

As revealed, this forum will have, for the first time, a Cuba-Mexico Meeting on Obesity, as well as a Meeting of foreign graduates in Endocrinology. (Source: PL)
