Isla de la Juventud adopts measures due to heavy rains

Havana, August 27 (RHC)-- The Municipal Defense Council (CDM) of Isla de la Juventud, headed by Osbel Lorenzo, first secretary of the Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, held a meeting on Sunday to coordinate measures to be taken due to the heavy rains associated with tropical depression number 10 of the current hurricane season.

In the work meeting it was learned that the highest volumes of rainfall were reported in Cocodrilo (132 millimeters), a coastal town located in the south of the second Cuban island, where, according to meteorologist Luis Sanchez, the swells will reach in the coming hours up to two meters high.

Yaisel Covarrubias, delegate of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources in the special municipality, informed that in view of the rains registered in the last hours (45 millimeters as average), the volume stored in the dams rose from 62.6 to 63 percent and at this moment only El Enlace relieves its waters.

Although heavy rains were recorded in the northern part of the territory, there were no significant floods, nor were there any effects on the population and the economy.

So far, maritime and land transportations are being maintained, but not the areas, which have been suspended since the night hours of Saturday, August 26, according to information provided by Rafael Fuentes, director of the "Rafael Cabrera" airport of Nueva Gerona.

Osbel Lorenzo, in his capacity as president of the CDM, indicated to keep under close surveillance the water resources of the territory and due to the complex hydrological situation, due to the intense meteorological drought, he pointed out the water supply system in the affected localities.

Likewise, he called to optimize the time in the punctualization of the disaster risk reduction plans to all the instances, to deconcentrate the goods in ports and to protect those in warehouses and warehouses, to transfer the animals to high places and to harvest, while the meteorological situation allows it, the crops suitable for consumption.

The political leader also called to intensify the collection of solid waste in the towns, in order to avoid floods due to obstruction of the rain drainage and above all to preserve human life. (Source: ACN)
