Brazilian grassroots movements projected messages of solidarity with Cuba onto buildings in São Paulo, as part of ongoing actions to denounce the US blockade against the island and defend the sovereignty of Latin American peoples.
The initiative, carried out Friday night in the city center, was organized by Alba Movimientos, the Paulista Movement of Solidarity with Cuba, the José Martí Cultural Association of São Paulo, and the Homeless Workers Movement of the City Center.
“Defending Cuba is defending the sovereignty of peoples, the right to self-determination, and the building of peace,” read one of the messages projected onto a building facade alongside a map of the Caribbean nation.
This action marked the beginning of the National Day of Solidarity with Cuba and the commemorative activities for the centennial of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro. According to the organizers, quoted by the news portal Brasil de Fato, the mobilization reaffirms the legacy of the struggle for sovereignty, the self-determination of peoples, and Latin American integration, inspired by figures such as José Martí, Fidel Castro, Hugo Chávez, and Ernesto “Che” Guevara.
The movements also denounce the more than 60-year-old economic blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba and intensified by the Donald Trump administration, while rejecting Washington’s threats and interference in Latin America.
They also criticize the policies toward the region of the US president and his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and reaffirm the slogan “Hands off Latin America” in defense of the sovereignty of the peoples.
The National Day of Solidarity with Cuba will include caravans, bike rides, and anti-imperialist demonstrations in various Brazilian cities in the coming months.
This Saturday, a car caravan took place through the streets of São Paulo, displaying Cuban flags and messages of support for the island.
The program of activities also included acts of solidarity with the Venezuelan people and with President Nicolás Maduro, who remains imprisoned in the United States following his abduction on January 3rd.
There will also be festivals for Cuban Rebellion Day on July 26, murals dedicated to the centennial of Fidel Castro in different Brazilian states, and activities on August 13 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the revolutionary leader’s birth.
