South American Leaders Decide to Oversee Venezuela's Political Talks

Santiago, March 13 (RHC) -- South American foreign ministers have decided to dispatch a commission to Venezuela to oversee the political dialog toward peace in the country.

The decision was made during a meeting of foreign ministers from UNASUR, the Union of South American Nations, in Santiago de Chile on Wednesday.

The ministers of the bloc stressed their support for Venezuela in establishing a "dialogue between the government and all political forces and players."

After the meeting in Santiago, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elias Jaua voiced his government’s satisfaction with UNASUR's decision to attend the ongoing National Peace Conference, aimed at quelling the current unrest.

To that end, UNASUR has a significant role to play in preserving democracy in South America, said Jaua, adding that all of the regional presidents and top delegates attending the meeting in Santiago de Chile expressed their support for Venezuela's democratically-elected government.

"On the continent (of South America) there is no longer a space for coups, nor the overthrow of democratically-elected governments, nor fascist ideologies," added Jaua.

The foreign minister said Venezuela believes the demonstrations are part of an organized attempt by the extreme right to oust the socialist government of President Nicolas Maduro, with the help of the United States.
