Nicaragua Asks Cuba for Assistance Amid Threats of Earthquakes

Managua, September 15 (RHC)-- The Nicaraguan government has asked Cuba, Mexico and El Salvador to send experts to study the seismic movements registered in the western side of the country.

The coordinator of the Communications and Citizenship Council, Rosario Murillo, said that many specialists were in Nicaragua in April 2014, when a 6.2-magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks shook Managua and neighboring cities.

Murillo said: "We are concerned because the phenomenon is increasing, as well as the magnitude of earthquakes." She pointed out the need to further study this phenomenon to arrive at scientific conclusions.

According to reports by the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER), nearly 150 earthquakes were registered near the municipality of El Sauce, in the western department of Leon, from Friday until noon Monday.

The latest update by INETER says that the strongest of the recent tremors reached a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale and occurred early this morning at a depth of 15.4 kilometers.

One of the strategies to support families affected by these earthquakes is that the Government sends materials to build temporary shelters while damaged houses are repaired or new ones are built.
