Havana, February 4 (RHC)-- Pediatricians from the Children´s Hospital in the US state of Colorado arrive in Havana to exchange professional experiences with their Cuban colleagues in the area of attention to the newborn.

The 13-member U.S. group is headed by Dr Stephen Berman, from the University of Colorado, and by Dr James Perrin, from Massachusetts´ General Hospital and Harvard University. The two physicians have served as presidents of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The U.S. specialists will meet with Cuban pediatricians on chronic health conditions in children and the development of the first child stage, according to a press release. They will also expose the early development of the brain and the reduction of premature delivery.

Doctor Berman told reporters that they now expect to open real collaboration by making alliances with Cuba in order to improve the health of children in the two countries.

Berman, who is ad-hoc advisor to the World Health Organization and the Pan-American Health Organization, said that he would like to finally set up an exchange program so that Cuban doctors may go to the U.S. for training and U.S. specialists may travel to Cuba as well.

This visit to Cuba was sponsored by the Cuban Pediatrics Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Pan-American Health Organization, Colorado Children´s Hospital and the Center for Global Health at Colorado's School of Public Health.

Very interesting story. Hopefully, there will be much more collaboration between US and Cuban physicians and biomedical researchers in the near future.
