In the midst of a crusade by the Mexican government to attend to the devastation caused in the State of Guerrero by Hurricane Otis, Cuban doctors, out of the more than 700 working in 10 states of that country, emerge with their modesty and skills.

The devastation in the port city of Acapulco and other regions is visible, as well as the pain and trauma caused to families who lost relatives and/or their property, as well as the losses of business owners.

Hurricane Otis hit the mainland as a category five hurricane with winds in excess of 200 kilometers per hour and caused serious damage to the population, hence the importance of the current assistance from the government, compatriots and families.

In their social networks, Cuban doctors who have been working under contract mostly in remote areas in Mexico for more than a year volunteered their services to go to Guerrero.

In coordination with Mexican health institutions and the Cuban embassy, the professionals in white coats are already in the hospital of Renacimiento, in Acapulco, embodying solidarity and friendship with the country.

They joined the more than 800 health workers, including medical personnel from other states, who spontaneously help those who need it most.

The specialists from the land of José Martí are mainly located in highly marginalized Mexican regions.

There, the federal government has invested in modern equipment and modernized infrastructures, although they were left unused due to the lack of personnel.

The professionals sent by the largest of the Antilles helped to fill the vacancies and support the promotion of healthy habits.

It is all about medical science, altruism and cordial treatment, always in coordination with Mexican colleagues, knowing the usefulness of their service.

In the opinion of the director of the Mexican Social Security Institute, Zoé Robledo, there is a high valuation of the work of the doctors sent by the Caribbean nation.

Data at the end of last September showed the performance of more than 665 thousand consultations, 46 thousand specialized studies, 38 thousand dialysis and 3,400 complex surgeries.

With the experience of more than a year in that struggle, a group of Cuban health professionals traveled to the State of Guerrero, in spite of the communication, transportation and supply difficulties faced by the federal government.
