Women's Conference

by María Josefina Arce

Mexico has its sights set on August, the month in which it will host the Sixteenth Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, for the articulation of new actions in favor of gender equality.

Undoubtedly, this meeting will mark an important step in the path of empowerment of this population sector, as it has in its favor that for the first time it will be held in a nation headed by a woman, President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The president, who has always emphasized that all Mexican women have reached the presidency of the country, has launched several initiatives that vindicate the rights of women.

The actions, announced on March 8, International Women's Day, are also aimed at highlighting the important role of this segment of the population in the country's history.

Among these initiatives is to guarantee the construction of 200 Education and Child Care Centers for Working Mothers, where, according to the authorities, the children will receive health check-ups, vaccination controls and their nutrition will be monitored.

Also starting on August 1, the Pensión Mujeres Bienestar will be delivered to women between the ages of 60 and 62, who will join those aged 63 and 64 who already receive this bimonthly support, which seeks to strengthen economic security and improve their quality of life.

Since the beginning of this year, in municipalities with a majority indigenous or Afro-Mexican population, all women have been receiving this benefit.

Concrete actions also include the recognition of agrarian rights for at least 150,000 women, given the existing inequality in land tenure between men and women, given that only 27% of rural women have their rights recognized.

Another important step taken by the current government is to give preference to women as owners in the National Housing for Wellbeing Program.

Mexico, which will host the Sixteenth Regional Conference of Women of Latin America and the Caribbean in August, arrives at this event with concrete actions and a strong commitment to continue working for gender equality.
