Outstanding events: Concert by singer song-writer Carlos Varela

Cuban song-writer and singer Carlos Varela is launching a concert September 30 in New York alongside legendary musician Jackson Browne, as part of the Woodstock Film Festival.

The document, by Canadian film-maker Ron Chapman, reveals aspects of Varela’s over-30-year music career and how his music captivated young Cuban generations. The film also includes interviews with the musician with Spanish actor Benicio del Tro.

The Poet of Havana will be aired October 23 on Home Box Office, HBO. Varela, considered the Cuban Bob Dylan, is part of a generation of Cuban singers that followed Silvio Rodriguez and Pablo Milanes.

As part of the ongoing Voices of the world concerts and events in and around Havana, running until the 4th. of October at the theatre café of the Berhold Brecht cultural centre at 13th. street at the corner of I in Vedado and celebrating the 130th. anniversary of the birth of Polish playwrite Witkacy there will be a staging of El Dorado. by Reinaldo Montero and directed by Sahili Moreda. Thursday at 7pm, , Friday and Saturday at 8.30 and Sunday at 5pm.

And at the Trianon Theatre on Linea between A and B streets until October 4 there is a staging of El otro cuarto by Zbigniew Herbert, directed by Carlos Diaz and performed by el grupo de teatro el Publico. Friday and Saturday at 8.30pm Sunday at 5pm.

And for today last but not least on Saturday the 3rd. of October at 4pm at the Casa de Africa on Obrapia between San Ignacio and Mercaderes Streets in Old Havana the Grupo Folklorico Obini Batá under the direction of Eva Despaigne will present the didactic-cultural concert Peña cheketé dedicated to Orula.
