Havana, September 7 (ACN)-- Long jumper Maykel Massó and triple jumper Lázaro Martínez will represent Cuba in the final of the Wanda 2022 Diamond League in athletics, to be held on Wednesday and Thursday at the Letzigrund stadium in the Swiss city of Zurich.

The two Cubans will be active next Thursday, with the aspiration of conquering the coveted gem and be victorious in their respective events.

After 12 stops of the event, the closing of the athletic circuit will come with the addition that the winners will ensure their presence in the World Championship of the king sport in Budapest in 2023, an event in which they will be able to get the ticket to the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.

In the current year 2022, the six highest accumulators of points in each field specialty and the eight in the track will opt for the top prize, although all will start on equal terms, so the diamond will go to the winners in each of the two days.

In the case of the Caribbean nation's athletes, Massó, bronze medalist in the five hoops in Tokyo 2020, was third last June in Rabat, Morocco, with a mark of 8.08 meters (m), the same place he obtained in Silesia, Poland, on August 6, with 8.09 m.

Four days after his performance in Poland, the Santiago native won the title in the Principality of Monaco with his best mark of the season, 8.35m, according to the official website of World Athletics.

Moving on to Martínez, indoor world champion in Belgrade, Serbia, last March, he managed to climb the podium of awards on two occasions.

First, on August 26 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he placed second with 17.50 m; and on September 2 in Brussels, Belgium, he won the crown with 17.49 m.

In the Zurich finals, only 14 athletes will be able to defend their reigns from the previous edition, and the absences of sprinters Fred Kerley, from the United States, and Jamaican Elaine Thompson-Herah, owner of several Olympic gold medals, stand out.
