ALBA Games conclude in Caracas

Caracas, April 29 (RHC)-- The V ALBA Games are ending their competitions with activity in seven disciplines, mainly in athletics, which has scheduled 10 finals, before the closing ceremony.

The other disciplines in which the curtain will come down on Saturday are: basketball, bocce, mountain biking, rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline, weightlifting and table tennis.

After eight days of competitions, Venezuela leads the medal table by country with 203 gold, 208 silver and 183 bronze medals, for a total of 594.

Cuba, which competes in 11 disciplines less than the 33 scheduled, is in second place with 60 gold, 47 silver and 46 bronze medals for a total of 153, while Russia, which only participates in seven sports, has 18 gold, 13 silver and three bronze medals, for a total of 34.

Nicaragua has a total of 116 medals, divided into six gold, 23 silver and 87 bronze. It is followed by Bolivia with 6-2-4, and among the small Caribbean countries, Dominica has 1-1-3. Antigua and Barbuda has one silver, and St. Kitts and Nevis has two bronzes.

These Games, rescued by the Venezuelan government after 12 years without taking place, were created in Cuba in 2005 at the initiative of Presidents Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro to promote fraternity, cooperation and integration among peoples. They then took place every two years in 2007 (Venezuela), 2009 (Cuba) and 2011 (Venezuela).

Due to political adversities, they were not held in 2013 in Quito, Ecuador, and in Cochabamba, Bolivia, in 2015 as planned.
