Mayabeque ties for first place in Cuba's baseball league

Havana, May 18 (PL) - The Mayabeque Hurricanes will seek their second success this Thursday against the Vegueros of Pinar del Rio in the continuation of the tenth subseries of the qualifying stage of the Cuban baseball championship.

On Wednesday, the Mayabeque team tied at the top of the standings with the Avispas de Santiago de Cuba, with a 9-6 victory over the Pinar del Rio team.

The winners hit 15 hits, including three doubles, a triple and a home run, to back up the work of three pitchers, including starter Hector Eduardo Bermudez.

With the victory, they reached 26 wins against 19 losses, the same balance as the Santiagueros.

For the Hucaranes' offense, designated hitter Alexander Pozo batted 5-4, with a homer and three runs batted in, and torpedo Rangel Ramos 3-2, with a double.

Bermudez achieved his third success of the fair without the shadow of a setback, while for Mayabeque, Adrian Sosa closed with his eighth save.

The current national runner-up, Matanzas (25-20), was one game behind the leaders with an 8-6 victory over Ciego de Avila, with a win by reliever Haykel Parra.

In the other games of the day, Artemisa defeated Isla de la Juventud 6-5, Cienfuegos lost 10-11 to Sancti Spíritus, Industriales beat Holguín 8-1 and Granma defeated Las Tunas 7-2. In addition, the games between Villa Clara-Camagüey and Santiago de Cuba-Guantánamo were suspended due to rain.
