Judo, Russian Tasoev

Santiago de Chile, June 13 (JIT) - The International Judo Federation (IJF) has decided to award the world champion title to Russia's Inal Tasoev in the +100 kg division.

The decision comes two months after the Doha 2023 World Judo Championships, taking into account an inaccurate refereeing in the final of this division between Tasoev and French Teddy Riner.

In a statement, the IJF recalls that in that gold medal bout there was a situation in which neither the referee on the tatami nor the IJF Refereeing Commission gave any score.

The fact was recognized by the Commission after the competition, and in the communiqué announcing it they offered an apology to the Slavic athlete.

After a thorough expert analysis, in accordance with the refereeing rules in force, a score could have been awarded for Inal Tasoev's counterattack, read the communication of that Committee.

On this occasion, according to a note issued on its website, the International Judo Federation declares both athletes as the winners of the contest and awards a gold medal and the corresponding ranking points to Inal Tasoev.

The IJF's Solomonic decision not only allows Riner to keep his eleventh intercontinental crown, but also, taking into account the sporting merits, recognizes Tasoev as the just champion, who is already registered as a strong candidate to end the Frenchman's reign in the coming Olympic Games of Paris 2024.
