Las Tunas, Industriales, Santiago and Matanzas win in Cuban Baseball

Havana, July 10 (RHC) - Las Tunas, Industriales, Santiago de Cuba and Matanzas achieved victories on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Cuban National Baseball League, played by the best eight teams of the qualifying round.

The Industriales Leones debuted with a victory in the quarterfinals at the Huelga de Sancti Spíritus, beating the Spíritus team 7-3, in a game in which former major league player Yasmani Tomás made his comeback in Cuban baseball, hitting three hits, including a double, while Yasiel Santoya hit 4-2, with a home run and 4 RBIs.

Young Rafael Orlando Perdomo, 19 years old and a strong candidate to win the Rookie of the Year award for his eight wins in the regular campaign, was outstanding from the mound for the Blue Jays, with 3 innings without runs and only three hits allowed.

Also outstanding were Frank Herrera, with a legendary rescue by striking out five in two innings, and Juan Xavier Peñalver, who got the last three outs, two of them by strikeout.

The Leñadores de las Tunas achieved their second success at the Mella at the expense of Ciego de Avila 6x3, in a game won by Keniel Ferraz, with Rafael Viñales, 3-1, with two runs batted in.

At the Victoria de Girón stadium, Matanzas started ahead of Artemisa 6-4, with a comeback, in a game won by Daikel Parra, and in which Dayan García, for Artemisa, took the lead, while in extraining, Las Aviaspas de Santiago evened their particular duel against Toros de Camagüey by winning 2-1, in eleven chapters.

Victory for Osvaldo Acuña, although the most outstanding in the victory of the Santiago Aviaspas was Wilber Reina, who pitched 9 innings, with only one allowed, 7 hits and 5 strikeouts.

This Monday, Matanzas and Artemisa (1-0) and Industriales against Sancti Spíritus (1-0) will play their second quarterfinal games.

The playoffs started on Saturday with victories of Tumas against Ciego de Avila 5-1, and Camagüey against Santiago 13-6.
