Palmeiras vs Botafogo

Washington, Jun 28 (RHC) Palmeiras defeated Botafogo 1-0 today to become the first team to reach the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup, being held in the United States.

The Paulistas, runners-up in the Brazilian League, had just finished first in the group stage with a win and two draws, and this afternoon at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, they maintained their unbeaten record against their compatriots.

After the 90 minutes of play with their respective periods of extra time ended without a goal, where Abel Ferreira's men had the best chances to score, the game was decided in extra time.

An effective left-footed strike by Paulinho, assisted by Richard Ríos in the 100th minute, broke the siege of a Rio de Janeiro team that had spent most of the game defending its area.

It was enough for Fogão, who, although they woke up in the final stretch, could not achieve the desired equalizer despite having an extra man on the field due to Gustavo Gómez's expulsion, and had to say goodbye to the tournament.

Palmeiras' opponent in the next round will be the winner of the match between Portugal's Benfica and England's Chelsea, scheduled for the same day at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
