Quito, July 6 (RHC)-- Ecuador's Comptroller General, Pablo Celi, resigned on Monday amid a criminal investigation against him for the alleged crime of organized crime for which he has been detained since April 13th.

Celi resigned from the position he had been holding since June 2017 in a letter sent to the president of the Council of Citizen Participation and Social Control (Cpccs), Sofí Almeida, reported his defense lawyer Marcelo Ron.

In the letter, Pablo Celi pointed out that his decision is "irrevocable" with the aim of safeguarding the integrity of the institutional processes of the Comptroller's Office of the South American country.

Pablo Celi warned that there are forces interested in taking control of the instance, paralyzing it and blocking its processes.  Regarding his arrest and the case against him, Pablo Celi, said that his detention was arbitrary, despite all the elements presented by the Attorney General's Office in the case called Las Torres, in which he is implicated along with more than a dozen former officials and servants.

According to the investigation of the Public Prosecutor's Office, Celi and the others involved were part of a network to fade reports with observations of companies, in exchange for the payment of bribes.

He informed the decision shortly after being notified about the initiation of an impeachment trial against him, before the National Assembly, for breach of duty.   Pablo Celi has other accusations such as that of illegally occupying the position as subrogate.
