Amambay, May 22 (RHC)-- The mayor of Pedro Juan Caballero, José Carlos Acevedo, died Saturday night from the gunshot wounds he received in an attack last Tuesday in front of the Palace of Justice of Amambay.

As reported by his brother Ronald Acevedo, the 51-year-old intendant died Saturday night, hours after doctors declared him brain dead.   "My brother is now at rest", confirmed Ronald Acevedo, who besides being the brother of the deceased is also the governor of Amambay, the department to which Pedro Juan Caballero belongs.

This past Tuesday, José Carlos Acevedo was shot seven times -- twice in the neck -- in front of the municipal headquarters while he was attending the inauguration of a project together with his brother, the governor.

After the attack, Acevedo was pronounced brain dead, according to doctors from the Viva Vida Hospital, who considered the mayor's condition as "extremely critical."

"If the brain stops working, the rest will also stop working little by little and that is the current state of the mayor.  Unfortunately, even though other organs are under control, he is brain dead.}," explained a doctor at the hospital, hours before officially declaring Acevedo's death.

In Paraguay, the municipal government is exercised by the Municipal Board, which is the regulatory, control and deliberative body, and the Municipal Intendancy is in charge of the general administration of the municipality.

Pedro Juan Caballero is a city located in northeastern Paraguay.  It is the capital of the department of Amambay and is located 452 kilometers south of Asunción.
