Ecuadorian president assures he has US support in the impeachment process against him

Havana, April 6 (RHC) Ecuadorian president Guillermo Lasso assured that the United States supports him in the impeachment process that the National Assembly is processing against him.

Through a message on his social networks, the head of state indicated that he spoke with Christopher Dodd, adviser to the US president, Joe Biden, and he expressed his support. The Biden government is pending the democratic stability of Ecuador, Lasso wrote on Twitter.

The impeachment process is in the Oversight Commission of the unicameral Parliament, whose members have one month to present a report on the matter, which will then be voted on in plenary. To remove the ruler, 92 votes of the 137 assembly members are necessary.

According to analysts, Ecuador today means an enclave of interest for Washington taking into account the current geopolitical scenario of the Latin American region.

Last week, the United States ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, was in Quito, with whom Lasso agreed positions on issues to be discussed on the agenda of the Security Council of the multilateral organization, among other issues. At the same time, the Ecuadorian vice president, Alfredo Borrero, will travel to the United States today, as announced by the vice presidency in a statement. The vice president will spend 10 days in various cities in the United States "to seek strategic alliances for the benefit of the health sector," the note indicated.

If the impeachment is approved, Borrero would assume the presidency of the Andean country for the remainder of the current term, that is, until 2025. (Source: Prensa Latina)
