La Paz, April 15 (RHC)-- Bolivian President Luis Arce urged on Sunday to prevent the conflict initiated by Israel on April 1 with the destruction of the Iranian consulate in Syria from escalating into a third world war. "We urgently demand the UN secretary general to convene a meeting to prevent this conflict from escalating into a third world war," the dignitary assured on his social networks.

Arce insisted in his X account that respect for life, peace and security should be the guiding principles in relations between states and peoples.

In the Israeli attack against the consulate in Syria, three commanders and four officers of the Iranian Quds forces were killed, among them General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, considered the highest-ranking Iranian military chief killed after Qasem Solemani died victim of another attack in 2020.

The day before, Iran responded by firing dozens of drones and missiles at Israeli military installations, and argued that it carried out this operation on the basis of the principle of self-defense stipulated in Article 51 of the UN Charter.

"With regard to the events taking place in the Middle East, the Plurinational State of Bolivia reaffirms its commitment, expressed during the 78th and 79th sessions of the United Nations General Assembly, to turn the world into a zone of peace," President Arce wrote.

He considered that war is the worst way to resolve international conflicts, and added that the most effective way to avoid it is to address the structural and conjunctural causes that generate it, as the history of the 20th century has shown, since the open wounds still linger.

"We join the call of other countries of the world to establish peace in the Middle East within the framework of international law," concluded the dignitary.

This Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian explained that the Armed Forces carried out a coordinated operation against Israeli military targets, in a speech before ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions in Tehran.

According to the foreign minister, in a message to the White House the Islamic Republic made it clear that the actions were limited and aimed at punishing the Zionist entity.

However, the foreign minister warned that "if the United States intervenes to defend the Zionist entity by departing from the lands of the countries of the region, we will confront it."

Abdollahian clarified that Washington was aware in advance of the legitimate Iranian defensive military operation, and reiterated that the Islamic Republic will be forced to attack military bases in neighboring nations if it is exposed to any aggression.  (Prensa Latina)
