Bogota, December 20 (PL-RHC)-- Colombian Senator Jose David Name sent a letter to President Juan Manuel Santos demanding the recognition of the Palestinian State, reported the national media.

The recognition of Palestine as an independent state worldwide would help peace in the Middle East, stated Name, an Arab descendant in this Andean nation.

The Colombian senator recalls in his letter that Colombia is the only country in Latin America and the Caribbean that has not granted legitimacy to the Arab people as a free and sovereign state.

This legislative initiative comes after the European Parliament gave its approval on Wednesday, with large majorities, to acceptance of Palestine as a formal state. The Government granted in early December status of diplomatic mission to the Palestinian delegation in Bogota, recalled El Espectador.
