United Nations, September 15 (RHC)-- With overwhelming support and despite the U.S. pressure, Cuba was elected on Monday to be part of several subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
According to a press release from the island's mission to the United Nations, Cuba could have been elected without a vote, since for those bodies, there were the same number or fewer candidates than vacant seats.
But the United States delegation decided to request a vote for those candidates.
Ultimately, the Caribbean island got 52 votes out of 54 possible in all the bodies.
The press release notes, despite the U.S. maneuvers, Cuba obtained the support of the overwhelming majority of the ECOSOC members, which is a sign of the recognition that the island's diplomacy has in this principal organ of the United Nations.
As of January 2021, Cuba will have a seat in the following subsidiary bodies of ECOSOC: Commission on Population and Development, Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS, and the Committee for Program and Coordination.
