Santiago de Chile, Dec 2 (RHC) Cuban women are the majority in the legal sector and the country now ranks second in the world with the highest proportion of women in parliament, said Rosabel Gamon, First Deputy Minister of Justice.

The Cuban deputy minister is participating in a meeting on gender equity in Chile, organized by the Ibero-American Conference of Ministries of Justice (Comjib).

Cuba has a Program for the Advancement of Women, decided by presidential decree in 2021, which constitutes the government's strategy to promote equality, she recalled in statements to Prensa Latina.

She explained that the legislations derived from the 2019 Constitution address the issues of the fight against gender-based violence, discrimination, and protection of females, which is a cross-cutting issue for the whole society.

The Deputy Minister highlighted the advantages and guarantees given to women by the new Family Code, approved last September.

She referred to the creation of the Family Ombudsman's Office, under the responsibility of the Ministry of Justice, in charge of representing people in vulnerable situations.

The code gives them a lot of protection and a differentiated treatment also to the caregivers, a role played mainly by women, she said.

Even though we are not satisfied because there are issues to be improved, there is no doubt that we have a lot of progress to show, said the First Deputy Minister of Justice.

Representatives from Colombia, Honduras, Argentina, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Spain, and the host country are participating in the Ibero-American conference, which will conclude this Friday.

On the first day, the General Coordinator of the Comjib, Tatiana Salem, presented a framework agreement for the protection of women in situations of violence in the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). (Source: PL)
