Congress of Hematology 2023 concludes in Cuba

Havana, May 19 (RHC) The new trends in oral iron therapy as well as morbidity and mortality in patients with sickle cell disease, will be topics to analyze today on the last day of the 2023 Hematology Congress, held at the Havana Convention Center.

Other topics are clinical characteristics, hematology and imaging of children with sickle cell disease treated with a moderate dose of hydroxyurea and the future of the specialty.

The day before, the participants called for resuming the idea of camps for children and adolescents with hemophilia.

Relatives and doctors agreed that in these places the experts can address in detail all the particularities of this disease. In this way, relatives can have a better management of the disease, being an effective form of training.

Beyond the information they can receive in the camps, the children and adolescents fraternize, make long-lasting friendships and give their testimonies of how they live with their condition.

Although the ideal would be for this type of installation to exist in each province of the nation, those present are aware of the situation in the country, marked by the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States and the world crisis, which prevents the materialization of the idea on a large scale.

According to the medical literature, hemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder, in which the blood does not clot properly. This can cause bleeding spontaneously and after surgery or injury.

When the blood does not clot properly, excessive bleeding -internal and external- occurs after a wound or injury.

Symptoms include multiple large or deep bruises, joint pain and swelling, unexplained bleeding, and blood in the urine or stool. Treatment consists of injections of a coagulation factor or plasma. (Source: Prensa Latina)
