Havana, June 4 (RHC) -- The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel lamented the loss of human lives in a massive traffic accident that occurred this Saturday on the Havana-Melena highway, with a toll of at least four dead and more than 30 injured.

In his Twitter profile, the head of state said that he accompanies the families and friends of the victims in their grief, and reported that he is in communication with local authorities.

He added that the injured are receiving the necessary medical attention.

The accident occurred on Saturday when a bus that was traveling from the port of Batabanó to the terminal of Ómnibus Nacionales overturned.

The passengers were coming from the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud and there were 49 people on board at the time of the accident.

Party and government authorities in Havana visited the injured in the health institutions where they were hospitalized.
