Díaz-Canel praises Cuba's results in San Salvador 2023

Havana, Jul 9 (RHC) The first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and president of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel praised on Sunday the achievements of the island's athletes at the Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023, where they won 196 medals.

The head of state also sent congratulations to El Salvador for organizing the regional event in a short time. He highlighted that in that country the athletes of the largest Antillean Island obtained "impetuous and resilient" victories.

"It is time to recognize the 196 medalists and correct the path of those who could have contributed more," Diaz-Canel stressed on the social network.

He also highlighted Cuba's performance in handball, volleyball, wrestling, judo, and athletics, as well as Cuban coaches who accompanied other countries.

"Now it´s time to train hard, #SantiagoDeChile2023 is coming; welcome to the Homeland," he added.

The Cuban delegation was represented by 499 athletes (267 men and 232 women) in 36 sports and took part in 356 of the 447 events called.

Cuban athletes won 74 gold medals (36 of them for women), 59 silver medals, and 63 bronze medals, and ranked third in the medal table of the Games, which was headed by Mexico (145-108-100) and Colombia (87-92-65).

In total, 20 sports contributed titles: wrestling, with 15 gold medals, athletics and judo (nine), shooting (five), canoeing and swimming (four), chess, table tennis, and rowing (three), weightlifting, diving, handball, boxing, taekwondo, fencing, artistic gymnastics and cycling (two), volleyball, sailing, and karate (one) (Source: Prensa Latina).
