Havana, July 28 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel commemorated today through his Twitter account the 102nd anniversary of the birth of heroine Melba Hernández, a prominent revolutionary fighter in the struggle against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista (1952-1958).

The president highlighted on the social network, the exploits of "the heroine of the Moncada, clandestine fighter and guerrilla, diplomat of the Revolution, fighter for peace and the rights of the peoples of the Third World".

Hernández was born on July 28, 1921, in the town of Cruces, in the former province of Las Villas, in the center of the country.

She graduated as a lawyer from the Law School of the University of Havana in 1943 and received a degree in Social Sciences.

Melba Hernández and Haydée Santamaría were the only women involved on July 26, 1953 in the assault on the Guillermón Moncada barracks, in the city of Santiago de Cuba, and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, in the city of Bayamo (east), led by the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro.

She was part of the national leadership of the 26th of July Movement, a Cuban political and military organization created in 1955 led by the historic leader, Fidel Castro, and in Mexico she participated in the preparations for the expedition of the Granma yacht, which would arrive in Cuba in 1956 to resume the struggle against the Batista dictatorship and achieve the revolutionary triumph of January 1, 1959.

Hernandez was also founder of the Communist Party of Cuba and member of its Central Committee since the third congress, as well as deputy to the National Assembly until her death.
